One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about training is that it is dull and boring. This is certainly true in cases with huge data dumps of dry material that are heavy on presentation and have little to no hands-on application. This begs the question, “How can we make it different?” It begins with the understanding of what training is, and what it is not, and then designing performance-based training that is lighter on presentation, with most of the time spent on application. We learn by doing, not just watching! We also need to add a creative connection by infusing fun and variety into our training sessions.
In all our Langevin courses, we model this philosophy by beginning each day with a brainteaser. We also sprinkle a variety of brainteasers and icebreakers throughout the duration of the course. Let’s face it, sometimes, depending on the industry, the material and content can be dry. Yet, it still must be taught, and our participants must learn it to improve their performance on the job. So, why not spice it up a bit by incorporating a variety of icebreakers, and lecturette and discussion methods to your courses? Your participants will thank you for it and it may also help change the image that training is dry and boring.
